No Bra Day 2019: From Raising Breast Cancer Awareness To Sharing Mastectomy Pictures; Here’s Everything You Should Know
Being a woman isn’t easy. As for most us, the time between waking up and going back to bed is no less than a battlefield. Among many other ordeals that most of the women face, fighting disease as deadly as cancer is one of them, breast cancer to be specific. It is something that can be dealt with and defeated, given there is enough awareness.  And to mark the same, October is observed as the International Breast Cancer Awareness month – to raise awareness about the most common form of cancer found in women.

And October 13 i.e., today is celebrated as ‘No Bra Day’, as an attempt to spread knowledge about the life-threatening disease and let all the women out there go bra-free for a day. On this day, women across the world share their inspiring stories of surviving or battling with breast cancer, by sharing images of their mastectomy under the hashtag #NoBraDay on Twitter. They also aim at raising awareness about the most common symptoms of breast cancer and urge others to undergo check-ups as a precaution. Significance of No Bra Day:

This campaign was kick-started by plastic surgeon Dr Mitchell Brown from Toronto, Canada. It was originally known as BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day, to make women aware of their reconstruction choice after the surgery, which is known as a mastectomy. In this process, the whole breast is removed and there are five types of mastectomy – simple, total, modified radical, radical and partial mastectomy. However, in a few cases, nipple-sparing mastectomy is also performed.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a number of methods can be used as breast cancer screening tools; the list includes mammography, clinical breast exam and breasts self-exam (in order to identify the lumps).
